The Spellshop

by Sarah Beth Durst

2024

Series background & context

The Spellshop novels trade dark forests and monster races for tidal pools, jam jars, and secret spellbooks. Set in the same world, each cozy fantasy story follows different characters whose quiet lives brush up against illegal magic and the shifting politics of an island empire.

The Spellshop begins in the Great Library of Alyssium, where introverted librarian Kiela has spent more than a decade caring for powerful spellbooks far from everyday life. When a revolution erupts and the library goes up in flames, she flees with her only friend, Caz, a magically awakened spider plant, and an armful of rescued books.

Kiela hides on her childhood island in the Crescent Islands, hoping to live unnoticed in her parents’ overgrown cottage. Instead she finds a community battered by magical storms and long neglected by the empire. Feeling responsible, she starts brewing jam and quietly crafting small, practical spells for neighbors, opening an illegal spellshop behind the façade of a cottage kitchen and slowly letting people back into her guarded life.

In The Enchanted Greenhouse, a new protagonist, Terlu Perna, wakes from a punishment that turned her into a wooden statue and finds herself on a nearly deserted island filled with hundreds of crumbling magical greenhouses. With only a grumpy gardener and some very opinionated plants for company, she must repair the failing enchantments that keep the place alive while deciding whether it is safe to trust anyone again.

Upcoming and companion volumes like Sea of Charms carry the same gentle tone out onto the open sea, following a small-boat captain, her oddball magical crew, and a rescue that turns into a fake-dating arrangement. Each story stands alone but rewards readers who enjoy spotting familiar places, legends, and side characters from earlier books.

Across the series you will find low-stakes plots with real emotional weight, plenty of food and tea, and an emphasis on found family and second chances. The Spellshop world is full of charming details, from merhorses and singing flowers to spider plants with strong opinions, and it offers a warm, hopeful corner of fantasy to linger in.
