Into the Wild

by Sarah Beth Durst

2007

Julie Marchen’s family is full of retired fairy-tale characters, from her witch grandmother to her mother Rapunzel. When the magical Wild under Julie’s bed breaks loose, it tries to drag everyone back into scripted stories, and only Julie can fight it.

Series background & context

The Into the Wild duology asks what happens after happily ever after, once fairy-tale characters have slipped out of their stories and tried to build quiet lives in our world. It is middle grade fantasy that mixes family drama, school worries, and full-on questing.

The heart of the series is Julie Marchen, a twelve-year-old girl growing up in a very unusual household in central Massachusetts. Her mother is Rapunzel, her grandmother is a witch, and her adopted brother is a talking cat who used to be Puss in Boots. They run a small, low-key fairy-tale motel and do everything they can to keep magic from spilling into the neighborhood.

All of them once escaped an enchanted wilderness known simply as the Wild, a tangle of living story that forces characters to replay roles again and again. For years it has slept under Julie’s bed, contained in the form of a creeping, vine-like jungle. It is not evil in a mustache-twirling way, but it is hungry for stories and completely indifferent to individual lives.

In Into the Wild, that fragile peace breaks. The Wild stretches beyond Julie’s bedroom and begins reshaping her town into a fairy-tale kingdom filled with towers, dragons, glass slippers, and wicked stepmothers. Julie must chase after her captured mother and friends, dodge dangerous story roles, and figure out how to outwit the rules of narrative themselves if she wants to bring everyone home.

Out of the Wild picks up after the apparent victory. When the Wild unexpectedly spits out Rapunzel’s prince into the twenty-first century, Julie suddenly has a gallant, clueless father who keeps trying to be a storybook hero in rush-hour traffic. A new threat tied to Sleeping Beauty sends Julie and her dad on a cross-country road trip that turns gas stations and tourist traps into the backdrop for enchanted battles.

Across both books, readers can expect fast-paced adventure, a lot of humor, and a heroine who is brave mostly because she refuses to let the people she loves be written into tragedies. The series plays with familiar tales without requiring you to know every reference, and it keeps the focus on choice, loyalty, and figuring out who you are when the script says you should be someone else.
