Remember Me This Way

2020

Ariana and the men of The Sound of Us are finally close enough to imagine forever. Fame, trauma, and old wounds still stand in the way, and loving each other may be the riskiest choice of all.

Series background & context

The Sound of Us is Jane in emotional contemporary mode, and it is one of her most openly aching series. The books revolve around Ariana and the three boys she once loved, boys who go on to become famous rockstars while she is left behind carrying her own damage. Fame matters here, but not in a glamorous fantasy way. It mostly raises the stakes on a love story that was already bruised.

The past never stays in the past.

That is built right into the structure. Remember Us This Way moves between earlier chapters of Ariana's life with the boys and the painful present, where she has been trapped in an abusive marriage and is no longer the girl they remember. That split timeline is a huge part of the series' pull. You watch the innocence, attraction, and closeness form, then crash into the adult consequences of everything they did not know how to handle.

As the story continues through Remember You This Way and Remember Me This Way, the books stay focused on healing, reconnection, and whether found family can survive real trauma. The men are rockstars, yes, but the deeper fantasy here is being seen after years of being hurt in silence. Ariana has to decide whether she can let herself be loved again, and the men have to face what it means to come back for someone who never really got the chance to move on.

The tone is angsty, romantic, and emotionally direct. There is less darkness in the external world than in Jane's paranormal books, but the internal damage can hit just as hard. Music gives the story some sweep, but the real strength is the tenderness layered under all the regret.

If you want second-chance romance with a why-choose setup, rockstar energy, and a heroine trying to reclaim herself after abuse, this series is a strong entry point.
