Series background & context
The Sometimes books are a small trilogy, but the setup is a fun one. Eaton takes ordinary lives, throws in a sudden shift in fortune, and then asks what money, desire, and insecurity do to people who were already carrying a lot.
Officially, the series is described as rags-to-riches with steamy romance, and that fits. The first book opens with a heroine who is barely keeping things together, then changes the whole emotional equation with a lottery win. That kind of turn is part fantasy and part trap, because the money may solve one problem while opening several others.
What matters most in this series is not wealth itself. It is the pressure that comes with getting what you thought you wanted. Eaton tends to write characters who are still dealing with fear, pride, grief, family needs, and self-doubt even after circumstances improve. The romance has to work its way through all of that.
The tone is a little sweeter than some of her darkest suspense work, but there is still heat and still enough emotional complication to keep the books from feeling airy.
