Series background & context

The Shepherds series starts with a familiar Andrews and Wilson frame, a former Navy SEAL, a missing child, a clock that is already running, then turns sharply into stranger territory. Jedidiah Johnson is not just another operator with trauma and good instincts. He has spent years trying to bury old visions and abilities he does not understand. When he comes home to help, those gifts come back with force.

From there, the books open into a hidden war.

The Shepherds are an elite organization fighting on two levels at once. On the surface, they move like a covert team, gathering intel, deploying quickly, and taking on deadly missions around the world. Underneath that, they are up against dark spiritual forces, fallen enemies, and attacks designed not only to kill people but to twist belief, fear, and human weakness.

Jed is a good guide through that world because he is not serene or all-knowing. He is skeptical, wounded, protective, and very comfortable with rifles and breaching, not always with faith and mystery. That tension keeps the series grounded. The supernatural elements are real, but the books still feel like thrillers driven by decisions, consequences, and team trust.

Setting matters here too. Nashville and the broader American South give the early books a rooted, lived-in feeling, while later installments widen the map to international missions. Along the way the series builds its own vocabulary of Shepherds, Watchers, and Dark Ones without losing sight of the people carrying the fight.

So what should you expect? Military action, yes. But also spiritual warfare, moral strain, and a sincere interest in faith under pressure. Start with Dark Intercept and read forward. This is a series that grows best in order, because Jed's understanding of himself and the unseen conflict changes book by book.
