Author bio
Brian Andrews came to fiction from a world where mistakes are expensive. He served in the U.S. Navy as a submarine officer, later worked as a nuclear engineer, and brings that sense of pressure, systems, and consequence into his books. He studied psychology at Vanderbilt University and earned a master's degree in business from Cornell University.
He started writing young. He has said he published his first short story as a teenager, but the real push toward novels came later, after his first submarine tour, when he began to wonder if he should finally try writing a book.
That turn matters.
Andrews' early solo work already showed the lanes he liked best. In The Calypso Directive and Reset, he wrote science driven thrillers about bodies, brains, and institutions that want to control both. The science is big, but the stories stay personal. Ordinary people get trapped inside systems far larger than themselves, then have to think, improvise, and run.
A huge part of his career took shape when he teamed up with fellow Navy veteran Jeffrey Wilson. They met through the thriller world and began writing as Andrews & Wilson, bringing together Andrews' submarine background and Wilson's experience as a combat surgeon. Their breakout series, beginning with Tier One, follows John Dempsey from elite SEAL duty into the murkier world of covert intelligence work. Readers who like those books tend to come back for the team dynamic, the mission detail, and the way the action always carries a human cost.
He likes professionals under pressure.
That shows up across the rest of the bibliography. Sons of Valor widens the Tier One world through Keith "Chunk" Redman and a new generation of operators. Dark Intercept takes some of the same tactical energy and turns it toward spiritual warfare, following Jedidiah Johnson into a stranger and darker kind of fight. Under the name Alex Ryan, Andrews and Wilson also wrote the Nick Foley books, Beijing Red and Hong Kong Black, which mix biosecurity, espionage, and modern China. More recently, Andrews and Wilson were chosen to write new Jack Ryan novels and to continue W.E.B. Griffin's Presidential Agent line with Rogue Asset.
Even when the setting changes, a few things stay steady. Andrews writes about teams more than lone geniuses. He likes chain of command, tradecraft, emerging tech, and the moment when a clean plan meets messy reality. His books often ask what duty costs, what loyalty survives, and how much of a person can be bent by war, politics, or fear before something gives.
He has kept one foot in the larger writing community too. Andrews is a principal contributor at Career Authors, and he and Wilson also help lead the AWE imprint at Blackstone Publishing. That fits the shape of his career. He writes thrillers, yes, but he also seems interested in the larger machinery around storytelling, how stories are built, shared, and carried forward.
