The Seventh Sword Books in Order

The core idea of The Seventh Sword is pure Dave Duncan: a dying modern man wakes up in the body of a famous swordsman in another world and immediately discovers that everyone around him expects competence he does not have. Wallie Smith is not a farm boy discovering hidden power. He is an adult with a technical mind, a sharp sense of humor, and a very real fear that he is in over his head.

The world he lands in runs on sword ranks, divine meddling, and social rules that make violence look almost ceremonial. Sword skill is status. Religion is active, not decorative. The Goddess has plans. Wallie, unfortunately, is stuck inside them. That gives the series both its adventure engine and its best joke: the man least suited to becoming a fantasy hero is the one being shoved into the role.

It gets serious quickly.

What starts as a body-swap portal fantasy becomes a story about identity, responsibility, and the cost of killing. Wallie has to learn this world's customs while people much more deadly than he is try to use, test, or eliminate him. His friendship with Nnanji becomes one of the series' anchors, and the later return novel The Death of Nnanji revisits that bond from an older, darker angle.

These books are fast, funny, and more thoughtful than they first appear. Duncan keeps the plot moving, but he is also interested in what a sensible outsider would notice about a culture built around swords, honor, and divine purpose. If you like portal fantasy with adult protagonists, clean plotting, and a hero who would rather think first and grandstand later, this is a great place to start.
