Series background & context

It all begins at a secluded castle on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Known as Atlantis, this sprawling estate is the childhood home of six young women. They lead very different lives, but they share one defining bond: they were all adopted as babies by an elusive billionaire they call Pa Salt. When he passes away suddenly, the sisters gather at the castle to mourn the man who gave them everything, only to discover he has left behind one final, life-changing surprise.

He hasn’t just left them a fortune. He has left them a map to their pasts.

Pa Salt provides each daughter with a specific clue—often a set of coordinates—pointing toward her true heritage. This setup launches a global scavenger hunt that spans the entire twentieth century. The narrative structure is ambitious but comforting, allowing readers to settle in with one sister at a time. As each woman grabs the thread of her history, the story transports us away from the present day and deep into the lives of her ancestors.

This is where the magic of the series really takes hold.

Rather than sticking strictly to modern drama, the books operate as dual-timeline historical fiction. One moment you are navigating a romance in modern London or Geneva, and the next you are swept into the construction of the Christ the Redeemer statue in 1920s Rio de Janeiro. The transition is always seamless. You might find yourself backstage at a concert in Leipzig, pearl diving in the heat of Australia, or walking through the frosty landscapes of Norway while uncovering the history of Edvard Grieg’s music.

The research required for such a project was immense.

The author traveled extensively to ensure the local culture and history in each installment felt authentic. From the red dust of Kenya to the frantic energy of New York City, the settings are characters in their own right. However, the travelogue aspect never overshadows the central emotional mystery. While the sisters are busy finding their biological families, they are also grappling with a lingering question: who was Pa Salt really?

There is also the matter of the missing sister. The series is based on the mythology of the Pleiades star cluster, which famously contains seven stars. Yet, Pa Salt only adopted six daughters. The mystery of the "lost" seventh sister runs like a current through every book, keeping readers guessing until the very end.

Sadly, Lucinda Riley passed away before she could reveal the final secrets of the saga.

However, she left behind a comprehensive plan for the conclusion. Her son, Harry Whittaker, took up the mantle to write Atlas: The Story of Pa Salt. This final volume ties together the loose threads scattered across the globe, ensuring that the questions raised in that castle on Lake Geneva are finally answered.
