Series background & context

The Secrets of the Isles series is Roseanna White in a lighter, more playful mood, though there is still plenty of danger beneath the charm. Set on the Isles of Scilly, these books trade wartime intelligence for treasure maps, pirate history, island lore, and a circle of characters who keep stumbling into mysteries they absolutely should leave alone, but never do.

The trilogy begins with The Nature of a Lady, when Libby Sinclair arrives on the islands hoping for a bit of distance from her matchmaking family and instead finds a missing woman, strange deliveries, and hints that everything may connect to a long-buried pirate story. To Treasure an Heiress brings that missing woman, Elizabeth, to center stage and turns the treasure hunt funnier and more chaotic, especially once Lord Sheridan gets involved. Worthy of Legend expands the final stretch into something even more layered, letting Arthurian legend brush up against the ongoing search.

The setting is one of the series' biggest pleasures. White clearly enjoys the small-island feel, the sea air, the cottages, the boats, the winds, and the sense that history is never very far below the surface. The islands are not just picturesque. Their isolation, old stories, and strange geography shape the mysteries in every book.

There is also a lovely mix of interests at work here. Natural history, archaeology, folklore, antiquities, and family expectation all have their place. The books are adventurous, but they are also gentle in the best way. White gives the characters room to be funny, awkward, curious, and human. The humor is a bigger part of this trilogy than in many of her war-based series, especially in the second book.

Even with the lighter tone, the emotional themes still feel familiar for White. Belonging matters. So does truth, especially the truth about who you are and where you are meant to stand. The romances are warm and satisfying, but the sense of place may be what lingers longest.

This series smiles more than it snarls, and that is part of its appeal.
