Taming Lady Temperance
by Karen Witemeyer
2026
Temperance crusader Noreen O’Sullivan throws herself into shutting down her town’s saloon, often clashing with Deputy James Paxton, who values order more than public battles. As a planned march and rising tensions draw them together, both must weigh ambition, justice, and the risky pull of a romance neither intended to start.
Series background & context
The Secret Society of Spinsters introduces a new circle of heroines who have stepped outside the usual expectations of nineteenth century Texas womanhood. Rather than waiting passively for proposals, these women organize, strategize, and throw their considerable energy into causes they believe will make their towns better places, even when that pits them against powerful men.
The series opens with Taming Lady Temperance, which follows Noreen O’Sullivan, a devoted member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Noreen is convinced she is called to fight the damage she sees alcohol doing in her community, from broken families to squandered wages. When she receives an invitation to join the Secret Society of Spinsters, she sees it as a sign that there are other women ready to tackle big problems with her, and she throws herself into the work of shutting down the local saloon.
Standing in her way is Deputy James Paxton, a man who believes firmly in law, order, and avoiding controversy. James has political ambitions that depend on being seen as steady and impartial, not as the ally of the town’s most vocal reformer. Noreen’s fiery speeches and well-organized protests unsettle the careful balance he tries to maintain, yet he cannot ignore her courage or the truth in some of her accusations about the damage drink has done.
Their clash over tactics and priorities becomes the backbone of the first story. Noreen wants sweeping change and is willing to risk disapproval and danger to pursue it. James worries about escalating tensions, especially as saloon owners and their allies start to push back. When the two are forced to work together on a temperance march and later on more serious trouble tied to the saloon, they begin to see beyond labels like "spinster" and "lawman" to the complicated people underneath.
Around them, the Secret Society itself takes shape as a kind of informal network. Unmarried women from different walks of life gather to support one another, trade information, and brainstorm ways to meet needs they see in their communities, whether that means protecting vulnerable workers, advocating for reforms, or simply making sure no one sits alone in church. Membership does not mean a rejection of romance so much as a refusal to let marriage be the only measure of a woman’s success.
While the tone stays hopeful and often humorous, the series does not shy away from the costs of challenging social norms. Public criticism, strained family relationships, and very real threats from those whose profits are at stake all raise the stakes. At the same time, glimpses of growing affection, answered prayers, and unexpected allies suggest that standing firm on conviction and opening one’s heart do not have to be mutually exclusive. Readers who enjoy spirited debate, slow-building romance, and heroines unafraid to speak up will find plenty to love in this society of so-called spinsters.
