Author bio
Karen Witemeyer grew up in California, then traded the Pacific coast for West Texas when she moved to Abilene Christian University, where she earned both bachelor and master’s degrees in psychology and met the Texan she would marry. She has made Texas home ever since, soaking up its sunsets, history, and frontier grit.
That love for Texas shows up all over her fiction. She likes small towns, wide skies, and the kind of front-porch communities where everyone knows your business and usually has an opinion about it.
A lifelong bookworm, she started out simply loving stories, then began wondering if she could tell some of her own. Over time, that wondering turned into a regular writing habit, wedged between family life and other responsibilities, until historical romance was no longer just a daydream but a full-time calling. Today she builds her drafts the way her characters might build a homestead, one steady piece at a time, trusting the work will eventually turn into a place readers want to visit.
Her early novels, including A Tailor-Made Bride, Head In The Clouds, and To Win Her Heart, set the tone for what readers now expect from her books, with ordinary Texans whose faith is tested by danger, disappointment, and unexpected love.
From there she moved into connected worlds. The Archer brothers, four fiercely loyal ranchers on isolated Texas land, anchor a set of stories about family, sacrifice, and the risks of letting outsiders in. The women of Harper’s Station form a different kind of family, a community built as a refuge for those who need a fresh start, while the Patchwork Family books follow orphans and outcasts who stitch together something that looks a lot like home. In the Hanger’s Horsemen novels, former cavalrymen roam 1890s Texas taking on the kind of jobs no one else will touch, only to be disarmed by sharp, capable women they never saw coming.
More recently, she has turned classic fairy tales loose on the frontier. The Texas Ever After series reimagines stories like Snow White and Cinderella in a world of Texas Rangers, cattle kings, and railroad fortunes through books such as Fairest of Heart and If the Boot Fits, with Cloaked in Beauty continuing the pattern. She has also played in a shared-world project, contributing In Her Sights to the Pink Pistol Sisterhood, where a legendary pink-handled pistol supposedly nudges its owner toward true love.
Awards have followed the work rather than leading it. Her books have received honors such as the Christy Award, the ACFW Carol Award, the HOLT Medallion, the National Readers’ Choice Award, and the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award, and she has been a finalist multiple times for prestigious romance prizes. In 2023 she was voted Readers’ Favorite Christian Historical Author by a major Christian fiction magazine, a nod from the very audience she writes for.
Away from deadlines, she lives in Abilene, Texas, with the husband she still happily calls her Texas hero. Their children are grown, but they show up often enough to be lovingly pestered.
When she is not plotting new ways to throw fictional couples together, she relaxes with cross-stitch projects, mugs of tea, board games, and old gospel hymns. Those quiet, ordinary moments feed the warmth in her stories, which always bend toward grace, a bit of laughter, and the promise of a hard-won happily ever after.
