Series background & context
The Scattered and the Dead is a post-apocalyptic survival-horror series set after a mysterious virus has spread, the power grid has failed, and most of the world is gone. The dead are a constant threat, but they are not the only one. Scarcity, isolation, fear, and other survivors can all be just as dangerous.
This is not one hero's straight journey through the ruins. It is a broad story told across several connected books and timelines. Book 0.5 begins close to the disaster through Decker, an agoraphobic shut-in recording the last days before everything falls apart. Book 1 opens the view to more survivors, and later installments keep widening the world as different groups try to endure what is left.
The people matter as much as the outbreak.
Mitch, Erin, Izzy, Baghead, Delfino, Lorraine, Ray, and others each experience the collapse from a different angle. Some are trying to protect the people beside them. Some are carrying old guilt. Some want to find a safe place, while others have to keep moving because there is nowhere safe to stay. Their paths do not always run together, but the books gradually show how separate struggles belong to the same damaged world.
The series has zombies and violent action, but it spends plenty of time on the slower parts of disaster too.
