The Scarlet Chronicles is Shana Galen's historical romance series set against the fear and upheaval of the French Revolution. It draws inspiration from the legend of the Scarlet Pimpernel, while following its own cast of people caught between revolutionary violence, royal loyalties, and the need to survive.

France is not a distant backdrop here. The danger reaches into country estates, city streets, prisons, ships, and the paths out of the country. Characters must decide whom to trust when old positions of safety have disappeared and a careless word can put someone in prison or worse.

The series opens with To Ruin a Gentleman. Angelette, a recently widowed French comtesse, is forced to flee when unrest turns violent, alongside English viscount Hugh Daventry. Their journey pulls them into the early violence of the Revolution and introduces the blend of danger and romance that shapes the series.

Later books keep widening the view. Traitor in Her Arms follows people whose loyalties are complicated by the revolution. Taken by the Rake and To Tempt a Rebel continue to explore the underground work surrounding the Scarlet Pimpernel and his allies. The books include aristocrats, agents, rebels, survivors, and people who have lost much of what once defined them.

The romantic tension often comes from divided loyalties. A character may be hiding a name, working for an opposing cause, or protecting family members who cannot safely be named. That makes trust an active choice, not just a feeling. The couples have to face political danger as well as their own assumptions about class, duty, and betrayal.

These are adventurous historical romances with a darker setting than a typical drawing-room Regency. There are chases, rescues, prison threats, secret identities, and narrow escapes, but the books keep their focus on the people trying to find a future amid the chaos.

The main romances have their own endings, so individual titles are approachable. Still, beginning with To Ruin a Gentleman offers the clearest introduction to the world, its risks, and the network of people who keep choosing courage when it would be easier to run.
