Lord and Lady Spy is a playful Regency espionage series about agents who would be very good at saving England if they could stop keeping secrets from their spouses. The books are connected to the Barbican, an elite intelligence group working against threats to the Crown.

The first novel, Lord and Lady Spy, begins after the Napoleonic Wars. Adrian and Sophia Smythe have both been spies, although neither fully knows the other's role. With the war over, they are stuck in the quieter routines of marriage and Society until a murder investigation gives them a chance to return to work.

Retirement does not suit them.

The series takes a knowingly light approach to spy fiction, borrowing a little of the gadgetry, code names, elaborate villains, and globe-trotting mood of classic secret-agent stories. The romance remains central, though. The best missions are often the ones that force a couple to stop performing and say what they actually need from each other.

True Spies follows Baron Winslow Keating and his wife, Elinor. He is trying to complete one last mission and repair a marriage strained by years of absence. Love and Let Spy introduces Jane Bonde, a highly capable agent who knows far more about danger than courtship, and Dominic Griffyn, a man with reasons to be wary of love. Other stories bring back agents Blue and Helena, weapons designer Eliza Qwillen, and Pierce Moneypence.

The stakes include assassins, coded messages, false identities, murders, and political enemies. Yet the tone is breezy, funny, and romantic rather than grim. A mission may involve a dangerous criminal, but it may also involve a jealous spouse, a ballroom disguise, or the inconvenient fact that two people have unfinished business.

The books work best for readers who enjoy banter, competent women, protective but imperfect heroes, and plots that happily lean into their own wildness. Each main novel gives a different couple the spotlight, with novellas filling in side stories and revisiting familiar faces.
