The Sandsea Trilogy Books in Order

The Sandsea Trilogy is a desert-set fantasy series about stories, old magic, and the dangerous gap between what people believe and what is true. Chelsea Abdullah draws on the feeling of One Thousand and One Nights while building her own world, where jinn are feared, hunted, and valued for the magic tied to them.

The series begins with The Stardust Thief and Loulie al-Nazari, a relic hunter known as the Midnight Merchant. With help from Qadir, her jinn bodyguard, Loulie finds and sells illegal magical objects. When her work brings her to the attention of a powerful sultan, she is forced onto a desert quest for a legendary lamp. The job brings her together with the gentle, story-loving Prince Mazen bin Malik and Aisha bint Louas, a skilled thief with loyalties of her own.

It is not a simple treasure hunt.

The journey takes the group across a harsh desert and into the path of ghouls, jinn, royal schemes, and secrets that have been hidden for generations. Each of the main characters carries a version of the past that is incomplete or carefully managed. As the quest deepens, the series asks who gets to tell history, what stories can do to people, and whether a person can choose a different future.

The Sandsea itself matters as much as any city or palace. It is a vast, shifting desert tied to the old realm of the jinn, and its buried history drives the conflict between humans and jinn. In The Ashfire King, Loulie and Mazen find themselves in the jinn realm, where cities are sinking beneath the Sandsea and political alliances are breaking apart. Loulie is pulled into a much older war while trying to understand the magic now connected to her. The wider story becomes more focused on the future of both realms and on the difficult choices facing the people caught between them.

The trilogy is best read in publication order. Start with The Stardust Thief for the main cast, the rules of the world, and the first major quest. Then continue to The Ashfire King, which builds directly on its consequences. The Midnight Merchant is the planned finale, bringing Loulie, Mazen, and Aisha together as the conflict between humans and jinn reaches its most dangerous point.
