Series background & context
The Sacrifice duet takes the opulence of the IVI world and twists it into something almost mythic. The Tithing and The Penitent tell the story of Azrael Delacroix and Willow Wildblood, two people born into a curse that demands blood every generation.
When the Wildblood family presents their daughters on the night of the Tithing, they know exactly what they are offering. One girl will be chosen and given to the Delacroix heir as a living sacrifice meant to keep both families safe from an ancient doom. Willow, marked by a crescent moon, is that girl, and Azrael has no choice but to take her.
From the start, their connection is tangled up with destiny and resentment. Willow has grown up under the weight of a fate she never consented to, yet she steps forward with more courage than anyone expects. Azrael has spent his life preparing to be the Penitent, the one who carries out the ritual and bears the spiritual cost. He intends to do his duty, to make the sacrifice and move on.
Of course, that is not what happens. As they share a home, a bed, and the terrifying knowledge of what is supposed to be done, the line between captor and beloved blurs. The gothic setting isolated estate, old magic, whispers of witchcraft wraps around a romance that should not exist but refuses to die.
The Penitent continues their struggle against a fate written long before they were born. The curse tightens, enemies press in, and every attempt to find a loophole carries new risks. The question at the heart of the duet is simple and cruel: is love a gift from whatever forces control their world, or is it just another tool those forces use to demand a higher price?
Although the Sacrifice books are connected to the IVI universe, they stand apart tonally. There is less boardroom maneuvering and more storm swept moors, more talk of bloodlines as magic than as simple pedigree. Fans of Knight and Zavarelli’s secret society stories who also enjoy a brush of the paranormal will find this duet a satisfying, eerie addition to the world they have already built.
