The Rules for Disappearing

by Ashley Elston

2013

Meg Jones has been six different girls in six different states since her family entered witness protection. When they land in rural Louisiana she vows this identity will be her last, breaking the program's rules as she and farm boy Ethan Landry hunt for the truth about why they are on the run.

Series background & context

The Rules series follows Meg, a teenager who has spent the last year being shuffled through the witness protection program with her parents and younger sister. By the time the first book opens, she has already answered to half a dozen names and lived in as many states, and she is exhausted by the constant lying.

Their latest placement drops them in a small Louisiana town, with new IDs, new backstory, and strict instructions from the federal suits about how to stay invisible. Meg’s father refuses to talk about the crime that put them in danger, her mother is sliding deeper into drinking, and her little sister is so anxious she barely speaks. Meg copes by writing her own rules for disappearing, a private list meant to protect her heart when the next move inevitably comes.

Of course the rules do not last long. At her new school she meets Ethan Landry, a smart, stubborn farm boy who recognizes that something about Meg’s family does not add up. Their slow, wary friendship turns into first love, even as Meg tries to keep him at arm’s length. Much of the tension in the first book comes from that push and pull, the way everyday high school problems and Friday night football sit right beside coded phone calls, surveillance, and the threat of being yanked out of town overnight.

Underneath the romance, the series is driven by Meg’s need to know why they are running. She is not content to accept her father’s silence, and her search for answers nudges the family outside the safe lines of the program. As she digs into old ledgers, false identities, and the men who want those secrets buried, the story becomes a road trip style thriller, with back roads, cheap motels, and the sense that someone dangerous is always one step behind.

The second book, The Rules for Breaking, starts where the first leaves off, with Meg ready to live as herself again. That fragile freedom does not last. The man who once posed as a friendly agent is still at large, and his new game pulls Meg, Ethan, and her sister back into a world of kidnappings, hidden safe houses, and desperate bargains. Some of the action moves to New Orleans, where the cramped streets and crowded French Quarter make it hard to tell who is watching.

Across both novels readers see Meg grow from a girl keeping her head down to someone willing to risk everything to protect her family and decide her own future. The books mix high stakes suspense with the comfort of a loyal boyfriend, a prickly but loving little sister, and flashes of normal teen life that keep the danger grounded. If you like stories about witness protection, first love under pressure, and the question of how far you would go to reclaim your identity, The Rules series is a tight, fast moving place to start.
