Series background & context

The River Into Darkness duology is set in the same world as Moontide and Magic Rise but looks back to an earlier, more secretive age. Here the last great mage, Lord Eldrich, is quietly working to wipe out every surviving trace of magic.

In Beneath the Vaulted Hills readers meet Erasmus Flattery, who lived with Eldrich as a boy and still carries the marks of that experience. Drawn into the mage’s plans, Erasmus is sent to lead an expedition in search of ancient knowledge that fanatics called Tellerites are desperate to obtain. The Tellerites believe those lost teachings hold the key to immortality.

The journey takes Erasmus through salons, laboratories, and dangerous wilderness, and it confronts him with people who have paid heavy prices for their contact with sorcery. He is never quite sure whether he is serving a necessary purge or participating in the destruction of something vital.

The Compass of the Soul deepens that moral tension. Eldrich orders Erasmus to find Anna, the Tellerites’ leader, and erase both her and her order. Erasmus’s resentment of his mentor, his sympathy for Anna, and his own complicated desires all collide as he uncovers the real cost of ending magic.

Rather than vast battles, these novels focus on private choices made in drawing rooms, libraries, and hidden sanctuaries. The magic is powerful, but it is also fading, and much of the drama comes from deciding whether that fading is a tragedy or a mercy.

Read on its own, The River Into Darkness offers a complete story about the twilight of an age. Read together with Moontide and Magic Rise, it gives a richer sense of how history, rumor, and human frailty shape what later generations believe about their world.
