The Initiate Brother

by Sean S Thomas Russell

1991

In the empire of Wa, war and plague have toppled a dynasty and left a fearful new emperor on the throne. Sent to a dangerous frontier post, Lord Shonto relies on young monk Shuyun, whose hidden powers may reshape the empire’s fate.

Series background & context

The Initiate Brother duology is an epic fantasy set in the empire of Wa, a realm that blends influences from imperial China and Japan. It begins after plague and war have shattered the old royal line and left a new, insecure emperor on the throne.

At court, the Order of Botahist monks has served for centuries as spiritual advisers, mediating between imperial power and religious teaching. Under the new regime that long-standing trust is broken. The emperor Akantsu fears the monks almost as much as he fears the great noble houses, particularly Lord Shonto, a general whose popularity makes him dangerous.

Lord Shonto is ordered north to govern a troubled border province where barbarian tribes have long probed the frontier. Everyone understands this is meant as a death sentence. Shonto accepts the posting anyway, bringing with him a young Botahist monk, Shuyun, whose quiet manner hides unusual martial and spiritual gifts.

As the story unfolds, the series weaves together Shonto’s military campaigns, Shuyun’s spiritual training, and the lives of several courtiers, including Shonto’s adopted daughter Lady Nishima. Court factions, rival monasteries, and foreign powers all push toward open conflict. At the same time, signs appear that the Perfect Master, a figure at the heart of Botahist belief, may have been reborn after a thousand years.

The magic in these books grows out of ritual, meditation, and long practice rather than quick spells. Political choices and spiritual questions constantly overlap. Shuyun has to decide what it means to remain a monk while serving a lord at war, and Shonto has to reconcile compassion with the brutal demands of command.

Russell takes his time with setting, from mountain monasteries and floating cities to formal gardens and crowded streets. Battles are important, but so are conversations in shadowed corridors and the small gestures that signal respect or defiance in a rigid court culture.

Because the two volumes form one continuous arc, the Initiate Brother series rewards being read straight through. Readers looking for an Asian-inspired world with layered politics, philosophy, and measured, character-centered storytelling will find a great deal here.
