Series background & context

The Rigante cycle follows a fictional clan culture living in a green, rain swept land that feels strongly Celtic. Across the sea lies the empire of Stone with its disciplined legions and iron discipline, and later the Varlish nobility arrive to carve up the Rigante homeland and bend its laws to their own.

In Sword in the Storm we meet Connavar, born on a night that kills his father and marks him as a child of fate. Growing up in the village of Three Streams, he learns to fight, love and lead, but also discovers the darkness inside himself. A Seidh witch and an earth maiden introduce him to powers older than men, and a Seidh forged blade makes him Demonblade, war leader of his people as the empire of Stone pushes toward conquest.

Midnight Falcon turns to Bane, Connavar's illegitimate son, whose mismatched eyes mark him as his father's child even as Connavar publicly denies him. Hurt and furious, Bane travels to the Stone heartlands, becoming a gladiator in the arena and a weapon for other men. When the empire turns its armies toward Rigante lands, he must decide whether to serve his need for revenge or the people who never fully accepted him.

Generations pass before Ravenheart picks up the thread. The Rigante are now second class citizens under Varlish rule. Their language and customs are suppressed, their land owned by distant lords. In the deep woods a Wyrd woman keeps the old ways alive, while the giant Jaim Grymauch and young outlaw Kaelin Ring are pushed into resistance. Rumours grow about a mysterious figure called Ravenheart who strikes back from the shadows.

In Stormrider civil war splits the Varlish, and Gaise Macon, the Moidart's brilliant but conflicted son, commands royalist armies against rebels who include his Rigante kin. Ancient skulls, Seidh sorcery and long laid prophecies suggest that all these strands are part of a much older story. Enemies raised to hate each other have to decide whether they will keep spilling blood or stand together against something far worse.

Taken as a whole, the Rigante books feel like a tapestry of border wars, vendettas and uneasy alliances. Magic is present but never an easy fix, and the real battles are often over identity, loyalty and the price of clinging to freedom when every practical argument says to give in.
