Series background & context

Karen Fenech's The Protectors is a linked romantic suspense series about people who work to defend others when official channels, distance, or danger get in the way. Its central group includes people from law enforcement, government intelligence, the military, and special operations. They don't all work in the same place, and some are separated by long distances, but they are connected by family, friendship, loyalty, and shared experience.

The work is risky. So are the relationships.

The series begins with Imposter, when chemist Dr. Eve Collins is accused of involvement with a chemical weapon and CIA operative John Burke is assigned to her case. From there, the books move through different corners of the larger network. FBI agent Mallory Burke is stranded in a mountain storm after a human-trafficking operation goes wrong in Snowbound. In Pursued, police chief Mitch Turner must decide whether an attack on his fiancée is connected to the crime boss he is trying to bring down.

Each installment shifts the spotlight to a new couple and a new threat, while keeping the wider world of the Protectors close by. Hide follows Allison Sandoval as she escapes a powerful husband and turns to former Navy SEAL Zach Corrigan. The novella Caught puts Elle Jameson in the hands of a man tied to human traffickers, leaving her unsure whether he is captor, rescuer, or both. Later books continue to bring old wounds, professional duty, and personal loyalties into collision.

Romance is part of the pressure, not a break from it. Many of the central relationships begin with doubt: an agent does not know whether a suspect is telling the truth, a former couple must work together again, or someone in need of protection has every reason to question the person offering it. The emotional thread is usually about earning trust while the external danger keeps moving.

Expect investigations, kidnappings, cover identities, organized crime, political danger, and threats that hit close to home. The tone is fast-moving and tense, with protectors who are capable but not invulnerable. The books deal with subjects such as human trafficking, abuse, murder, and violent crime, so some storylines are darker than others.

For the clearest experience, start with Imposter and read forward. The major cases are resolved within their own books, but the series has recurring characters and connections that mean the emotional payoff grows when read in order. Caught is a shorter entry placed after Hide, and it can also work as a stand-alone introduction to the series' darker side.
