The Originals Books in Order

Julie Plec's The Originals novels take the Mikaelson family back to eighteenth-century New Orleans, long before the events of the television series. Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah are the center of the story. They are ancient vampires, fiercely attached to one another, and just as capable of making each other miserable.

New Orleans matters as more than a backdrop. It is a growing, lawless city where vampires, witches, and werewolves all want safety, territory, and control. The Mikaelsons arrive believing they can make a home there after leaving danger behind. Instead, they walk into another struggle for power, with every alliance carrying a price.

The first book, The Rise, opens in 1722. Klaus becomes interested in Vivianne, a witch promised to a werewolf in a marriage meant to ease tension between supernatural groups. His choices put an already shaky peace at risk. Meanwhile, Elijah tries to secure a place for his family in the city, and Rebekah finds reasons to question what their new life might cost.

Family is the real battlefield.

In The Loss, the story moves to 1766, after New Orleans has been rebuilt following a hurricane. The siblings appear to have gained more influence, but Klaus still wants more. A spell meant to give him power opens the door to a threat from the city's past, and the Mikaelsons have to face a war that cannot be solved by simply taking over another block of the city.

The Resurrection reaches 1788, when control of New Orleans is divided between vampires and werewolves. Klaus answers that frustration by planning for open conflict. Elijah is pulled in a different direction by a new relationship, while Rebekah begins looking beyond the same old cycle of her brothers' grudges and violence. Their goals keep splitting apart, but the books never let them forget that their survival is tied to one another.

These are historical supernatural dramas with romance, political tension, and plenty of sibling conflict. Klaus is impulsive and hungry for control. Elijah is often the family member trying to hold things together. Rebekah wants loyalty, love, and a life that is not always decided by her brothers. The series is a good fit for readers who want more Mikaelson history, especially the early fights that shaped their bond with New Orleans.
