Series background & context
The Off Season is a sub series within Neuhold’s Palm Island universe, zooming in on what happens once the ferries stop running regularly and the tourists go home. Palm Island is a gay resort island that hums with parties all summer, but these books are interested in the quieter half of the year, when the locals finally get their home back and have six months to figure out their lives.
Perfect Ten kicks things off with a shy med school dropout who has been drifting through his island life without really connecting. When his flirtatious, tattooed bartender coworker offers him a spare room for the off season, casual roommate status very quickly starts to feel like something more. Surf lessons, island hikes, and a lot of fumbling firsts turn into a full blown roommates to lovers story.
In Taken by Storm, the focus shifts to the island’s grumpiest chef, a man most people avoid unless they are hungry. His long time waiter is one of the few who is not intimidated by him. When an ex husband shows up uninvited, a fake boyfriend scheme seems like the perfect way to save face, at least until fake kisses start feeling dangerously real.
Other books in the wider Palm Island line, like Dirty Trick, continue to explore the same circle of locals: bartenders, surfers, restaurateurs, and assorted troublemakers who have built their own sunny, salty found family. The Off Season titles zero in on the idea of being figuratively and literally stuck together on a small island, with nowhere to run from your feelings.
The tone throughout is light, sexy, and a little bit ridiculous. Nicknames abound, there are jokes about “Hand Job Island,” and more than one scene revolves around beach bonfires or ill advised dares. At the same time, the books make space for grief, burnout, and the question of what you owe the person you thought you would be versus the life you actually want.
If you like island romances with surfboards, prickly chefs, low angst, and a group of friends who keep showing up in each other’s stories, The Off Season is a breezy place to land.
