The Obsidian series is Pearce in full space-opera romance mode. The setup follows Nia, a telepath who escapes a prison planet and finds herself among a renegade crew trying to protect their people from an empire bent on destroying them. That gives the books a strong forward drive right from the beginning.

Unlike the more self-contained Valhalla stories, Obsidian feels built around an ongoing mission. Ships move, alliances shift, and the characters are always trying to stay one step ahead of a much larger enemy. Pearce keeps the emotional focus tight, though, so the action never drowns out the romance.

The crew matters as much as the couple.

That is part of the series appeal. These books are about found family as much as desire. Nia's personal questions, her bond with those around her, and the wider fate of the Adamites all pull together. New recruits and new relationships deepen the sense that this is a traveling community under pressure, not just a sequence of disconnected adventures.

If you like science fiction romance with rebels, empire politics, psychic gifts, and a continuing arc, The Obsidian books offer that combination in a readable package. They sit comfortably beside Pearce's other speculative work, but they have their own tone, a little more urgent, a little more mission-driven, and very interested in how loyalty is tested when escape is only the beginning.
