The real turn toward fiction came after she moved to the United States with her husband and four children. That was when she began writing in earnest and started turning her love of old-fashioned mysteries into stories of her own. She has spoken about wondering what a young Regency Miss Marple might be like, and what sort of trouble she might find herself in with a difficult veteran of the Napoleonic wars nearby.

That question led to the Kurland St. Mary mysteries, which begin with Death Comes to the Village. Those books pair Lucy Harrington, the rector's daughter, with Major Sir Robert Kurland, a wounded Waterloo veteran, and let their relationship grow alongside the investigations. Readers who enjoy village mysteries with a romantic thread tend to like the mix of gossip, class tension, family complications, and slow-building trust.

Research helps, but people are what keep the books moving. Lloyd is interested in how social rules shape everyday life, especially for women who are clever enough to see the limits around them. Under the Kate Pearce name, she has published historical romance, western romance, paranormal romance, and science fiction romance, including books such as Simply Sexual, The Reluctant Cowboy, and Planet Mail.
