Author bio
Catherine Lloyd grew up in London, England, in the middle of a large family of girls. She has said she was often in trouble for making things up, which feels like a pretty good origin story for a novelist.
History came in early too. She studied the subject seriously and earned a master's degree from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, giving her the kind of research background that later helped her write fiction set in carefully built past worlds. You can feel that training in her books, but it never sits on the page like homework.
She likes the texture of the past, not just the dates.
The real turn toward fiction came after she moved to the United States with her husband and four children. That was when she began writing in earnest and started turning her love of old-fashioned mysteries into stories of her own. She has spoken about wondering what a young Regency Miss Marple might be like, and what sort of trouble she might find herself in with a difficult veteran of the Napoleonic wars nearby.
That question led to the Kurland St. Mary mysteries, which begin with Death Comes to the Village. Those books pair Lucy Harrington, the rector's daughter, with Major Sir Robert Kurland, a wounded Waterloo veteran, and let their relationship grow alongside the investigations. Readers who enjoy village mysteries with a romantic thread tend to like the mix of gossip, class tension, family complications, and slow-building trust.
Research helps, but people are what keep the books moving. Lloyd is interested in how social rules shape everyday life, especially for women who are clever enough to see the limits around them. Whether the setting is a rectory, a country house, or a London drawing room, her stories usually turn on secrets, reputation, money, and the awkward fact that communities remember everything.
That attention to detail is part of the appeal. Her fiction notices how people travel, who gets to speak first in a room, what money can and cannot solve, and how a single rumor can alter a whole household. The history gives shape to the choices, but the stories stay personal.
She clearly has a soft spot for outsiders and observers.
Her later Miss Morton books take that interest in a slightly different direction. Starting with Miss Morton and the English House Party Murder, the series follows Caroline Morton, the daughter of a disgraced peer who must earn her living as a lady's companion. The setup gives Lloyd room to show English society from both above and below stairs, while still delivering murders, house parties, inheritance trouble, and a heroine who notices more than people expect.
She has also written widely beyond these mysteries, with more than 100 books across her different lines. Under the Kate Pearce name, she has published historical romance, western romance, paranormal romance, and science fiction romance, including books such as Simply Sexual, The Reluctant Cowboy, and Planet Mail. Readers often go to those books for different reasons: heat and tangled relationships in one case, family-centered ranch drama in another, and playful culture-clash adventure in the science fiction stories.
More recently, she has continued working with historical settings in other ways, including the standalone Chelsea Girls, set around Mary Quant and postwar London. After many years in the United States, she has returned to the UK and describes her life as somewhat transatlantic. Across all the different shelves her books can sit on, the through line is easy to spot: a love of history, a taste for complicated social worlds, and characters who are rarely content to stay quietly in the place society gives them.
