The Nick of Time Books in Order

The Nick of Time is George Alec Effinger's two-book comic science-fiction series about time travel, paradoxes, and the trouble caused when people treat history like a vacation destination. It begins with The Nick of Time and continues in The Bird of Time.

The first novel follows Frank Mihalik, chosen to become the first person to travel through time. His assignment looks simple enough: make a brief trip from 1996 to the 1939 New York World's Fair, then return home. The machine does not cooperate. Frank is stranded, repeatedly relives the same day, and soon discovers that a small experiment can open a much bigger mess.

Time travel is never just a device in these books. It is the joke, the trap, and the battlefield. Frank and the people around him bounce through eras, possible histories, literary echoes, and competing versions of reality. The story enjoys the fact that every attempt to solve a paradox can create several more.

The second book, The Bird of Time, moves further into a future where time travel has become a commercial industry. A trip into the past can be sold like a package holiday, but the people running the business are hiding dangerous truths about what the past is and what happens to travelers who do not return. A new traveler, Hartstein, gets swept into the conflict.

Behind the silliness is a struggle between organizations trying to control the timeline. The Agency and the Temporary Underground turn theoretical arguments into an active time war, with history itself as the ground being fought over. Characters cannot always trust what they see, remember, or believe about the past.

These books are broad, fast, and deliberately crowded. Effinger throws in loops, alternate worlds, historical detours, pop-culture riffs, and comic misunderstandings. The tone is closer to a madcap adventure than a solemn scientific puzzle, though it still has fun with the consequences of its ideas.

Read the novels in order. The Nick of Time establishes the rules, or lack of rules, and introduces the sort of escalating chaos the series enjoys. The Bird of Time expands the setting and makes time travel into a public business with private dangers. Come for the paradoxes, but expect a lot of jokes along the way.
