Author bio
George Alec Effinger was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 10, 1947. He grew up with little money, then won a scholarship to Yale, where he initially planned to study medicine.
Organic chemistry changed that plan. After he could not pass the course, Effinger left the pre-med track, moved to New York City, and began looking seriously at a different future: writing science fiction.
His first wife introduced him to the wider science-fiction community through Damon Knight and Kate Wilhelm. Effinger attended the Clarion Writers' Workshop in 1970, and three of his stories appeared in the first Clarion anthology the following year. His first published story, "The Eight-Thirty to Nine Slot," appeared in 1971. In those early years he also used several pen names and wrote comic-book stories alongside fiction.
His first novel, What Entropy Means to Me, arrived in 1972. It is a strange, playful story about storytelling, family, faith, and a quest on a distant world. That willingness to mix big ideas with jokes, odd turns, and ordinary human frustration stayed with him.
Effinger was a prolific short-story writer. Collections such as Mixed Feelings, Irrational Numbers, Dirty Tricks, and The Old Funny Stuff show how widely he ranged, from satire and absurdist comedy to alternate history, fantasy spoofs, and darker speculative tales. His award-winning novelette Schrödinger's Kitten follows a woman seeing possible versions of her life across many realities, using the idea without losing sight of the person at its center.
Then came the books most readers start with: the Marîd Audran novels. When Gravity Fails, A Fire in the Sun, and The Exile Kiss take place in the Budayeen, a future Arab quarter shaped in part by the streets and atmosphere of New Orleans. Marîd is a small-time hustler pulled into murder investigations, underworld politics, and a world where brain implants can alter personality, skills, and appearance.
The Budayeen books are tough, funny, restless, and deeply interested in identity. Effinger uses the setup for noir mysteries, but he also asks what independence means when money, power, and technology can rewrite the self.
He did not stay in one lane. Nightmare Blue, written with Gardner Dozois, is an interstellar drug conspiracy. The Nick of Time and The Bird of Time turn time travel into a fast, silly, surprisingly knotty adventure. He wrote mysteries such as Felicia and Shadow Money, several Planet of the Apes television tie-ins, and the comic Maureen Birnbaum stories about a shopping-minded young woman hurled through fantasy worlds.
Effinger lived for many years in New Orleans and faced serious health and financial troubles during his life. He died there on April 27, 2002, at age fifty-five. Posthumous collections including Budayeen Nights and Live! from Planet Earth helped keep his shorter work in print.
His fiction is often messy on purpose. It likes jokes, detours, noir setups, strange machines, and people who are trying to stay themselves when the world keeps changing the rules.
