Series background & context

The New Rulebook is the series that introduces many readers to Joy Ohagwu's fiction. It begins with Ruby Masters, later Ruby Towers, and Robert Towers, and throws them into a world where a powerful piece of technology, designed to control crime, has gone terribly wrong. That setup gives the books an unusual mix of contemporary suspense, relationship drama, and faith-centered resilience.

From the first book, the series moves fast. Ruby is framed, hunted, and forced to rely on Robert, the one person she trusts most. From there, the scope expands. Small-town crises, prison shadows, family threats, kidnappings, and old enemies keep reopening the conflict. The books do not stay at the level of one bad day. They gradually become a saga about survival, marriage, children, and the cost of outlasting evil.

Ruby and Robert are the heart of it.

What makes the series stand out is the way it balances outward danger with inward change. Ruby and Robert are not just dodging threats. They are growing up, building a life, and trying to keep faith steady while the ground keeps shifting. By the later books, the story has moved well beyond the first framing plot and into questions of legacy, leadership, and what protection means for a family.

If you like Christian suspense with a strong continuing arc, recurring villains, and a couple whose bond is tested over and over again, The New Rulebook is the obvious starting place. It is action-heavy, but it is also deeply invested in hope.
