The New Alchemists Books in Order

The New Alchemists shifts Marie Lu into adult fantasy, but it keeps many of her favorite pressures, ambition, divided loyalties, dangerous systems, and young people trying to outrun the roles built for them. The big difference is the setting. Instead of a future republic or virtual arena, these books take place in an alternate Los Angeles, called Angel City, where alchemy is real and tightly controlled.

Here, alchemy is not some distant, dusty art. It is power, currency, addiction, and status. Rival syndicates shape the city from the shadows and sell transformed perfection to the elite in the form of sand, a drug that can make users more beautiful, more charismatic, more magnetic. That idea gives the series a sharp crime-story edge, because the magic is inseparable from money and control.

The core relationship is between Sam and Ari. They begin as children with a shared past, then grow up on opposite sides of the city's alchemical underworld. Sam wants a way out of poverty and reaches toward Grand Central. Ari is taken from his family and raised within Lumines, becoming one of its brightest young alchemists. By the time Red City is underway, they know each other too well, and the world has made them useful to opposite masters.

That is where the series really bites.

This is urban fantasy, but it also feels like a gangland story, a rivals-to-enemies romance, and a book about the price of becoming exceptional. Red City sets up the war between Grand Central and Lumines and asks what perfection is worth if every transformation costs part of a soul. Silver Dawn carries the conflict outward after Grand Central falls, pulling Sam and Ari toward Europe, a new philosopher's stone, and an even bigger power struggle.

If you like fantasy with a modern city backdrop, morally compromised characters, and magic tied to class and vice, this series is doing something darker than Lu's YA work without losing her sense of momentum.
