Skyhunter is Marie Lu in full resistance-story mode. The series takes place in a world broken by conquest, where the Karensa Federation has crushed nation after nation and unleashed terrifying mutant beasts called Ghosts. Mara, the last free nation, is still standing, but only just.

At the center is Talin, a refugee who becomes a Striker, one of Mara's elite fighters. The Strikers are not decorative heroes. They are the last line between the Federation and total collapse, and the books never let you forget what that means. Training, loyalty, propaganda, fear, and survival all sit close together here.

The first book, Skyhunter, starts with a classic question that quickly becomes something bigger. A mysterious prisoner named Red is brought in from the front, and Talin cannot tell if he is a spy, a victim, or the kind of weapon that could change the war. Their connection, and the way trust builds under pressure, gives the series its emotional center.

Then the floor drops out.

By Steelstriker, Mara has fallen and Talin is forced into the Federation's machinery in the worst possible way. Friends are scattered, loyalties are tested, and the story shifts from defense to desperate counterattack. The second book widens the battlefield, but it still stays close to Talin and Red as they try to find each other again and pull the resistance back together.

The tone is intense and cinematic, with a lot of battlefield motion, but it is also one of Lu's clearest series about occupation and displacement. If you want high-stakes fantasy that reads with the pressure of a dystopian thriller, this is a strong place to start. The books are full of action, but the bigger draw is the feeling that every win costs something, and every act of loyalty has to be chosen again.
