The Mutant Mage Books in Order

This series is usually associated with the two Clane Linn novels, Empire of the Atom and The Wizard of Linn. The database title The Mutant Mage fits the heart of it well enough, because the story turns on a mutant outsider who gains access to powers and knowledge that look almost magical inside his own society. But the setting is pure van Vogt science fiction: a far-future Solar System rebuilding itself after ancient catastrophe.

The world of Linn is one of the series' biggest pleasures. Human civilization has survived, but not cleanly. Advanced machines and lost sciences still exist, yet much of society has slipped back into something that feels imperial and almost medieval, complete with court ceremony, dynastic politics, and the worship of Atom Gods. You get spaceships and palace intrigue in the same breath.

At the center is Clane Linn, born deformed into the ruling family and expected by custom to die. Instead, an atom priest keeps him alive and educates him. That one decision changes everything. Clane grows up as an outsider inside the court, physically vulnerable but intellectually formidable, and far more curious than the people around him. He learns to use forgotten technologies, read dangerous situations, and survive a family culture built on murder, rivalry, and opportunism.

He is both the weakest and the most dangerous person in the room.

The first book leans hard into succession struggles, imperial politics, war, and the rediscovery of ancient devices. The second opens the stage much wider. By The Wizard of Linn, Clane is not just maneuvering around his relatives. He is dealing with the returning alien threat that once shattered human civilization, traveling beyond the familiar world of the empire, and using strange aetherial spheres and captured technology to fight on a much larger scale.

What links the books is Clane's movement from family embarrassment to central figure in humanity's survival. The series keeps asking what kind of ruler or guardian an outcast genius becomes when everyone else underestimates him. It also makes strong use of setting. These are stories about people living among the ruins of a greater age, where old tools can look like miracles and the wrong hands can misuse them disastrously.

The tone is a lively blend of Roman-style court drama, mutant-superman story, and exuberant space opera.
