The Mortal Techniques Books in Order

The Mortal Techniques is not one long continuous story so much as a shared world full of legends, blades, gods, and very bad days. Rob J Hayes uses the series as a place to tell standalones, which means each book has its own cast, conflict, and flavor while still belonging to the same wider setting. That makes it easy to start anywhere and fun to keep going once the world gets its hooks in.

In Never Die, an eight-year-old boy chosen by the God of Death recruits fallen heroes for an impossible mission against an emperor who should not be killable. Pawn's Gambit follows a washed-up strategist pulled into a divine contest where mortal champions fight for the right to shape heaven's next ruler. Spirits of Vengeance turns toward ghosts, monsters, and a wandering onmyoji hunting things that do not always deserve a sword through the heart. The Century Blade reaches back into older legend, with dragons and a hero's quest at the center.

What links these stories is the world itself. Hayes draws on Asian cinema and mythology, so you get wandering swordsmen, spirit bargains, stubborn honor, martial arts duels, old grudges, and gods who meddle with very little concern for the people below. Empires rise and crack. Vows matter. So do names, teachers, oaths, and the cost of failing them.

The tone changes a little from book to book, but the series usually lives somewhere between heroic quest, wuxia adventure, and sword and sorcery. The action is fast and stylish, but there is always something sad or human underneath it. A lot of these characters are carrying grief, regret, or unfinished business. Even the bigger myths stay tied to personal stakes.

That balance is what makes The Mortal Techniques work so well as a series of standalones. You can come for the set pieces, the haunted swords, or the death gods, and stay for the characters who are trying to do one right thing in worlds that make that harder than it should be. If you want fantasy that feels mythic without becoming distant, this is probably Hayes's easiest doorway.
