The Merry Misfits of Bath is exactly what the title suggests: a group of people who do not fit neatly into society's preferred boxes, and who end up building friendship, support, and eventually love in Bath. These books are Regency romances, but they are less interested in the glitter of London than in what happens after people step away from it.

Bath suits them.

Hutton fills the series with characters who have been overlooked, judged, or quietly pushed aside. A failed wallflower opens a bookstore. A woman discovers her mother is a courtesan and tries to start over. A talented singer lives with a stutter. An artist survives a terrible ordeal. A woman doctor works in a world that does not expect her. A widow with a young daughter is still learning how to breathe easily again. The stories are different, but they all share that feeling of people trying to claim ordinary happiness in spite of what the world thinks they should be.

Friendship is the glue. The women in these books talk, compare notes, offer shelter, and nudge one another forward. That makes the series feel especially warm. Even when a book tackles harder material, class prejudice, disability, abuse, sexual danger, public shame, it still has an underlying sense of community. These characters are misfits, yes, but they are not alone.

The heroes are a mixed lot too: earls, businessmen, a gambling-club owner, a doctor, a viscount. What unites them is not title so much as willingness to see the heroine clearly. The romances work best when both people have to rethink what a respectable life is supposed to look like.

Because the cast recurs, reading in order is the best way to go. Start with The Bookseller and the Earl and move through The Courtesan's Daughter and the Gentleman, Lady Pamela and the Gambler, The Artist and the Rake, The Doctor and the Libertine, and The Widow and the Viscount. The series has a cozy, welcoming feel, but it still gives each couple real obstacles to face. If you like character-forward Regency romance with found family at its center, this is one of Hutton's most appealing sets.
