Series background & context

The Masked Arcana is a Toronto-set paranormal romance trilogy about a hidden supernatural world with its own rules, rivalries, and power structures. At its center are the Masquerada, people able to alter their appearance and, in some cases, take on entirely different personas. That gift makes identity a practical problem as well as a personal one. Who someone appears to be is not always who they are.

The series begins with Masked Possession. Caro Yeats is a former investigative reporter who now handles public relations for Toronto's supernaturals. Her newest assignment is Eric Kelton, a powerful Masquerada whose unpredictable alternate selves have become a public-relations nightmare. Caro is observant, skeptical, and difficult to charm, which makes Eric's attention as unsettling as it is tempting.

Their relationship sits inside a wider mystery. Eric is losing control of abilities he has always relied on, while Caro has enemies and a past that will not stay hidden. The book uses their uneasy partnership to introduce the series' mix of supernatural politics, secrets, danger, and sharp back-and-forth between two people who are not inclined to trust easily.

In Masked Desire, the focus shifts to Michaela Chui, security chief for the supernaturals' ruling council. When a human councillor is murdered, Michaela needs answers quickly and finds an unlikely partner in Cormac Redoak, an exiled fey courtier. Their investigation brings personal secrets and old political tensions closer to the surface.

Nothing in this world is simple.

The final book, Masked Longing, follows Estelle LaMarche, a vampire placed in charge of Queen Wavena's military, and Stephan Daker, a Masquerada lieutenant. With war against the Dawning approaching, they must work together despite a past encounter neither has been able to forget. When Estelle's brother is taken, the stakes widen from private longing to a conflict with consequences for everyone around them.

Each novel centers on a different couple, but the shared setting and building threat reward reading in order. Expect hidden identities, council politics, vampires and fey, and characters whose strongest defenses are often emotional ones. The tone is romantic and suspenseful, with enough mystery and danger to keep the relationships from feeling separate from the larger story.
