Series background & context
The Maestru series begins with Blood of Invidia, a science fiction and paranormal action story by Tom Tinney and his son, Morgen Batten. Its world is not limited to one kind of strange. The series brings together alien civilizations, ancient wars, immortals, vampires, lupines, shapeshifters, and human beings who are far less isolated than they once believed.
Long before the main story, the Invidians were a warrior people who fought across the galaxy and built an empire through conquest. Mortality stood in the way of their ambitions, so they pursued eternal life. They found it, then disappeared. Their absence did not make the history they left behind any less dangerous.
The past is waiting to be disturbed.
At the center of Blood of Invidia are three humans and one mysterious stranger. They become tied to an ancient path that may decide the fate of the galactic order. Humanity is an outlier in a populated galaxy, and the characters are drawn into rivalries and conflicts that have been unfolding on a scale they could hardly have imagined.
This is a series built for readers who enjoy genre collisions. The extraterrestrial side of the story brings first-contact questions and the shadow of an old empire. The paranormal side brings vampires, werewolves, and other shape-shifting figures into the same conflict. Rather than treating those elements as separate lanes, the premise uses them to show how many kinds of power and survival can exist in one universe.
The stakes move quickly from personal danger to a threat with galactic consequences. The characters must work out what the Invidians’ legacy means, whom they can trust, and why a buried history is suddenly becoming urgent again. There are surprises along the way, but the main drive is clear: follow the clues, survive the people who want them hidden, and stop a much older danger from taking control of the present.
The father-and-son partnership is part of the series’ background, too. Tinney and Batten developed the project through long-distance exchanges before meeting in person, building the setting and plot from shared ideas. That collaborative origin suits a story that is interested in connections across distance, time, species, and competing worlds.
Expect a fast-moving blend of cosmic history, monster mythology, and action. The Maestru books start with a question about vanished immortals, then ask what happens when the people living in their wake discover that the old war may not be finished after all.
