A Hope Divided shifts the focus to Marlie Lynch, a free woman in North Carolina whose home and laboratory are claimed by Confederate forces, and Ewan McCall, an escaped prisoner hiding in plain sight. The scale widens here. The series moves from close espionage into pursuit, family secrets, and the Underground Railroad, while still keeping the love story front and center. Marlie and Ewan are both thoughtful people, and the book gets a lot of mileage out of the tension between careful planning and the chaos of war.

Freedom is never treated like an abstract idea in these novels.

By the time you reach An Unconditional Freedom, the Loyal League itself feels like a living network. Daniel Cumberland, a man whose life was shattered by kidnapping and enslavement, joins forces with Janeta Sanchez, a Cuban woman pushed into double-agent work in Union occupied Florida. Their story adds more military strategy, divided loyalties, and emotional weariness to the mix. It is still a romance, but it is also about trauma, revenge, and what it means to keep going when history has already taken too much.

What links the books is the covert organization at the center of them. Different couples take the lead each time, but faces return, missions overlap, and the wider cause keeps building in the background. Cole is interested in the hidden labor of war, the people history books often push to the edge, and the messy gap between what a country promises and what it actually delivers. She also gives each book its own emotional shape, so the series never feels repetitive.

Expect tension, tenderness, and a clear-eyed view of the past. The setting matters, and so do the politics, but these books are never dry. They move.
