The first book, Whatever Happened to Betsy Blake?, begins with the disappearance of four-year-old Betsy Blake outside her family home in Dublin. Seventeen years later, Betsy’s father Gordon still cannot accept that the search is over. The police have moved on, and his wife has tried to rebuild her life, but Gordon is preparing for major heart surgery and wants one final effort to find his daughter. He hires Lenny to look again.

It is a cold case with a very personal deadline.

Lenny has little experience with a case this visible or this emotionally loaded. He must work out where to look when the official investigation has long been closed and the family has been pulled in different directions by grief. The mystery is not only about finding facts. It is also about the cost of continuing to hope when everyone around you has started to accept a different answer.

Whatever Happened Next? returns to Betsy’s story five years after she has been freed. The novella shifts attention from the mystery of where she was to the difficult business of living afterward. Betsy is back with her family, but familiar people and places do not automatically feel familiar to her. With Bozy beside her, she tries to imagine a future that is more than survival, while Lenny remains part of the wider picture.

This is a quieter, more character-focused mystery series than the author’s pure countdown thrillers. It still has suspense, but its main concerns are recovery, family strain, and the gap between a case being solved and a life being repaired. Dublin provides the setting for the original investigation, with the city’s close neighborhoods and ordinary homes making the disappearance feel all the more unsettling.
