Series background & context

Kami Garcia's Legion series follows Kennedy Waters, a teenager whose life changes after her mother dies under circumstances that do not make sense. Kennedy has no reason to believe in ghosts or demons until a spirit attacks her and two mysterious twins, Jared and Lukas Lockhart, arrive just in time to save her. From there, the ordinary world is gone for good.

What you cannot see can still hurt you.

Kennedy learns that her mother's death was not an accident and that she has a connection to the Legion of the Black Dove. The Legion is a secret group formed to fight a powerful vengeful demon and the paranormal threats working around it. Its remaining young members each bring something useful to the job: combat skills, technical knowledge, code-breaking ability, and protective magic.

The first book, Unbreakable, is a road-trip-style paranormal adventure with a haunted-house feeling. Kennedy joins Jared, Lukas, Alara, and Priest as they investigate dangerous locations and hunt the pieces needed to stop the demon. She is brave, but she is also the newest person in a group that already has secrets and history. The question of whether she truly belongs becomes one of the series' emotional anchors.

Trust is harder than fighting ghosts.

In Unmarked, the danger becomes more personal. The team must track the demon they accidentally unleashed while learning more about the Legion, the Illuminati, and Kennedy's own family. The series keeps its action moving, but it also spends time on grief, divided loyalties, and the pressure of being told that your family history has already decided your role.

The tone is darker and more horror-leaning than Garcia's Caster books. Expect vengeance spirits, secret rooms, old symbols, supernatural attacks, and a group of teenagers who have to make decisions usually left to adults. There is romance, especially in Kennedy's complicated connection with the Lockhart twins, but survival and trust are the main concerns.

Start with Unbreakable, then continue directly to Unmarked. The two novels tell one connected story, and the second book relies on the relationships and revelations from the first. Readers who enjoy paranormal mysteries with secret societies, a close-knit teen team, and a real sense of danger will find a different side of Garcia's work here.
