Series background & context
The Last Vampire series, later collected under the title Thirst, follows Sita, also known as Alisa Perne. She is not a newly turned teenager learning vampire rules. She is a five-thousand-year-old immortal who has survived centuries of war, love, loss, and reinvention.
Sita believes she may be the last vampire in the world. That belief is tested when she meets Ray, a human teenager whose presence awakens memories of the man she loved long ago. Their connection pulls her back into the risks of attachment, even though caring for ordinary people has always made her vulnerable.
Immortality has not made her safe.
The early books, beginning with The Last Vampire, Black Blood, and Red Dice, combine romance with pursuit and conspiracy. Sita faces enemies who want to kill her, use her blood, or uncover the secret of what she is. Her life in modern California is constantly interrupted by the weight of her past and the people who have followed her through time.
As the series expands, Pike brings in reincarnation, ancient history, spiritual questions, and mythology. Sita's powers are formidable, but the books do not treat that as a simple advantage. She has seen too much, carries responsibility for past choices, and has to decide whether protecting people means keeping her distance or risking another devastating loss.
The later installments, including Phantom, Evil Thirst, Creatures of Forever, The Eternal Dawn, The Shadow of Death, and The Sacred Veil, widen the story into a longer battle involving other immortals and threats that reach beyond one city or one lifetime. The series remains centered on Sita's voice, which is blunt, intense, funny at times, and shaped by centuries of grief.
This is vampire fiction with more action and mythology than gothic brooding. Expect chases, violence, romance, hidden histories, and big questions about whether a person can change after living for so long.
Start with The Last Vampire. The books build on Sita's history and relationships, so reading in publication order gives the strongest sense of how her world grows.
