Series background & context
The Last Huntress series is Estrella's most solemn and atmospheric work. It follows Scarlett, the last in a long line of monster hunters, and Rose, a young woman who wants the strength to reclaim her ravaged homeland. Together they move through a secondary world where werewolves, vampires, dragons, and older things still stalk the wilds.
In The Last Huntress the two meet on a snow covered road while hunting the only werewolf ever to escape Scarlett. Scarlett is hard and focused. Her calling leaves no room for softness or hesitation. Rose arrives with raw power and a desperate need for revenge. The book sets the pattern for the series. Each hunt is a visceral struggle, but the deeper conflict lies in what this life asks of them and what it takes away.
The Lord of Dark Waters pushes them south into a vast, haunted swamp. Officially they are tracking a rogue vampire. In truth they are walking into an old wound in the world. The swamp's whispering waters hide ruins, cursed legacies, and a power that threatens to drown much more than one region. Scarlett is forced to confront the past that shaped her, while Rose realises that vengeance is not as simple as killing individual monsters.
The Fire Upon the Mountain shifts the danger to the skies. Rumours speak of a dragon not seen since the days of Scarlett's grandmother. A city burns, another lies in the beast's path, and time is running out. The book reads like a long, tightening breath as Scarlett and Rose race to find a way to kill something that is, by design, almost impossible to kill.
In The Lonely Wood they return north at the request of Scarlett's uncle and find an ancient forest where elven magic is failing. Old wards unravel, an imprisoned evil wakes, and memories Rose thought she had buried rise again. The wood knew the first huntress. It might also witness the fall of the last.
Across all four books the tone stays serious and often somber. There is dry humour, but no one is safe and victories carry scars. Estrella uses the long journey to explore trauma, mentorship, found family, and the question of whether a life built on killing can leave space for anything else. Readers who enjoy character driven dark fantasy with strong action sequences will find a lot to sink into here.
