The Lady Travelers Society Books in Order

The Lady Travelers Society is one of Victoria Alexander's most openly adventurous series. Set in the late nineteenth century, these books follow women who want to see the world, and the men who are foolish enough to think they can keep up with them. The setup is both smart and funny, because travel in 1889 is exciting, difficult, and just respectable enough to cause trouble.

The series begins with the women behind the society itself. In the prequel material, Poppy, Gwen, and Effie are already in the habit of stepping in, setting things right, and pushing the correct people toward one another. By the time the full series is underway, their organization offers lectures, support, companionship, and, depending on your point of view, either practical help or a highly suspicious amount of meddling.

Then the traveling starts.

Each book takes the series somewhere vivid. Paris, Monte Carlo, Venice, and Egypt are not just pretty backdrops. Alexander uses them to change the pace of the romance and raise the stakes. A heroine looking for a missing relative in The Lady Travelers Guide to Scoundrels & Other Gentlemen has different problems from a widow chasing a stolen painting in The Lady Travelers Guide to Larceny with a Dashing Stranger, or a writer forced to prove her expertise in The Lady Travelers Guide to Deception with an Unlikely Earl. The settings give every romance a sense of motion.

What ties the books together is that mix of travel, comedy, and female independence. These heroines are often dealing with money, reputation, disguise, or plain old survival in a world that still expects them to stay home and behave. The heroes may start out skeptical, irritated, or determined to protect everyone in sight. They do not usually stay that way for long.

The tone is lighter than high-drama historical romance, but the books are not slight.
