Author bio

Victoria Alexander was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up all over the world in an Air Force family. That kind of childhood meant constant motion, new places, and lots of time spent watching how people talk, flirt, argue, and reinvent themselves. You can feel some of that restlessness in her fiction, even when the setting is a drawing room and the rules are very old.

Before she was a novelist, she was a television reporter. She worked in Nebraska and West Virginia, covering everything from the farm crisis to natural disasters, mine accidents, and crime. She reported on the story that later became the basis for Boys Don't Cry, exposed the trucking of New York City garbage to rural Nebraska, and covered presidents from Ford through Clinton. It was busy, messy, very real work.

Then fiction took over.

She has said she wrote her first novel, Yesterday and Forever, in 1993, stealing time on lunch hours, after work, and even during long city council meetings. Her first published book arrived in 1995, and she eventually left journalism to write full time, still a little amazed that the plan actually worked. That mix of discipline and humor shows up again and again in the way she talks about her career.

Readers usually come to Alexander for historical romance, but not a stiff or solemn version of it. Her books are known for lively banter, complicated courtships, stubborn heroines, and men who are usually far more rattled than they expect to be. The Perfect Wife became a number one New York Times bestseller, and books like The Wedding Bargain, A Visit From Sir Nicholas, What Happens at Christmas, and The Lady Travelers Guide to Scoundrels & Other Gentlemen helped build a big, interconnected body of work.

She writes a lot about families, especially the kind that meddle, protect, gossip, and refuse to stay neatly in the background. She also likes women who want more than the role laid out for them, whether that means choosing their own husband, taking to the road, chasing adventure, or keeping a few secrets of their own. Even when the stakes are emotional, there is usually a sense of movement in her books, toward a new city, a new season, or a new chance.

Not every Victoria Alexander novel stays in one lane, either. Alongside her Regency and Victorian romances, she has written time travel, reincarnation, contemporary romance, and holiday novellas. That wider range helps explain why some series feel like classic family romance while others lean into travel, mystery, or a slightly magical premise.

She has also said she credits both her love of journalism and her taste for romance to Lois Lane. That tracks.

These days Alexander lives in Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband and, by her own account, a house that always seems to be under renovation. Her official bio also makes room for two bearded collies, Louie and Reggie, which feels exactly right for a writer whose books so often leave space for chaos, affection, and a very human kind of happily ever after.
