Forge of Darkness

by Steven Erikson

2012

In Kurald Galain, realm of Mother Dark, tensions between nobles, soldiers and reformers edge toward civil war. Forge of Darkness looks back long before Malazan, tracing Anomander Rake, Draconus and others as seemingly small choices begin to fracture the Tiste into warring factions.

Series background & context

The Kharkanas Trilogy is Erikson’s deep dive into the ancient past of his Malazan universe. Set hundreds of thousands of years before the main series, it steps into Kurald Galain, the realm of Darkness, when Mother Dark still rules and the Tiste people have not yet split into the Andii, Edur and Liosan.

Forge of Darkness opens on a society under strain. Commoners rally around Vatha Urusander, a war hero whose followers want him to marry Mother Dark and reshape the realm, while her consort, Lord Draconus, becomes a lightning rod for resentment. The three brothers Anomander, Andarist and Silchas Ruin move between noble houses and armies, each trying—and often failing—to hold to a personal code as politics turn meaner.

Running alongside this is the slow unfurling of other ancient powers. The Jaghut are edging toward a war on Death itself. The Azathanai, near-immortal beings with their own opaque agendas, drift in and out of events, sometimes helping, sometimes merely watching. Everyday soldiers, priests, poets and servants carry most of the point of view work, giving the grand mythic names very human surroundings.

Fall of Light widens the conflict into open civil war. New cults rise, armies march, and Mother Dark’s decision to turn away from the sun fractures both faith and family. The trilogy leans into tragedy: we already know, from hints in Malazan Book of the Fallen, that the Tiste future is full of exile, betrayal and loss. The storytelling is more overtly formal and reflective, with long conversations about history, duty and the way stories distort the past.

Compared to the main Malazan series, Kharkanas is slower and more interior. There are still battles and magical catastrophes, but much of the tension comes from personal rifts—friends drifting apart, lovers breaking under pressure, entire cultures choosing sides that cannot easily be unchosen. It often reads like a bleak, fantastical family drama that happens to include gods and elder races.

For readers who already love Malazan, these books reframe familiar legends and side comments, turning background lore into lived experience. For new readers, they offer an alternate entry point into the world, though one that demands patience and a taste for dense, poetic dialogue.

It’s a story about how a civilisation talks itself into disaster long before the first sword is drawn, and about the people who see what’s coming and still can’t quite stop it.
