Series background & context

The Keeper Chronicles takes place in the later days of the same world, long after the events of Keeper Origins. By now the scattered lands have become the country of Queensland, and the Keepers have taken shape as wandering storytellers, historians, and mages who carry tales and magic between isolated towns.

The series opens with A Threat of Shadows and Alaric, a man who has already fallen from everything he believed in. Once an ideal Keeper entrusted with guarding histories and advising queens, he broke his vows and turned to darker magic when his wife Evangeline was poisoned and ordinary cures failed. The book follows his journey to find a legendary Wellstone that might hold a cure, traveling with a gruff dwarf, a seemingly bumbling wizard, and an elf whose power unsettles everyone around her.

Their search takes them through haunted forests, ruined valleys, and the remnants of past disasters tied to the Wellstone, while whispers of Mallon the Undying and his followers stir in the background. What starts as one man's desperate attempt to save the person he loves becomes part of a much older struggle over the soul of the land. Along the way every member of the group has to face past choices, old griefs, and the question of who they want to be now.

Pursuit of Shadows shifts the focus to Will, a storyteller and Keeper who is convinced his magic is too weak to be worth much. While Alaric is away, Will crosses the mountains into the harsh Roven Sweep in search of his missing sister, hiding his identity among a clan that hates Keepers. Traveling with their volatile chief Killien and the watchful ranger Sora, he stumbles into plans for an army, a dragon, and a different kind of conquest that threatens everything he is trying to protect.

In Siege of Shadows the narrative turns to Sini, a former slave who has finally found a home among the Keepers. She is the first woman in their order in centuries, still unsure she belongs and frightened by the wild strength of her own magic. When her foster brother Lukas is accused of gathering forces along the border and using his dragon to spread terror, Sini is forced to decide how far loyalty can stretch and what it means to stand with the people who took her in.

Together the three books form a single arc about standing up to an ancient evil that wants to return, but they never lose sight of the smaller, human cost of that fight.

Readers will find plenty of the comforts of classic epic fantasy, traveling parties, dwarven halls, elven woods, frost goblins, and the occasional very dangerous dragon. The tone, though, leans hopeful rather than grim, with an emphasis on friendship, forgiveness, and the slow work of healing after terrible mistakes. You can read the trilogy on its own or alongside Keeper Origins and the Aenigma Lights books, tracing how stories told by one generation echo into the next.
