Keeper of the Lost Cities The Graphic Novel Part 1: Volume 1

by Shannon Messenger

2023

The first graphic novel adapts the opening half of Keeper of the Lost Cities, tracing Sophie’s life in San Diego, her discovery that she is an elf, and her first breathtaking steps into the Lost Cities through vivid, full-color artwork.

Series background & context

Keeper of the Lost Cities: The Graphic Novels retell Sophie Foster’s first adventure in a highly visual format. Instead of one long prose volume, the story is split into two graphic novels that follow the same core plot while leaning into expressive artwork, color, and panel pacing.

Part 1 covers roughly the first half of Keeper of the Lost Cities. We see Sophie as an overachieving, lonely girl in San Diego who can hear other people’s thoughts and has no idea why. The panels take readers through the crowded museum field trip where she meets Fitz, the dizzying reveal that she’s an elf, and her first glimpses of places like Everglen and the wider Lost Cities.

The adaptation lingers on the emotional beats of leaving her human family, being adopted by Grady and Edaline at Havenfield, and trying to fit into Foxfire Academy. Facial expressions, body language, and background details do a lot of the work here, making moments of embarrassment, wonder, and fear easy to read even for kids who usually shy away from dense text.

Part 2 continues Sophie’s first year among the elves. It follows her struggles with demanding Foxfire classes, her shaky control over telepathy and other abilities, and her growing circle of friends and rivals. The book also brings the central mystery into sharper focus: unexplained fires, whispered conspiracies, and fragments of memory that don’t feel like they belong to her.

Because the story is condensed, the graphic novels move briskly from scene to scene, highlighting the big twists, creature encounters, and action set pieces. They keep the humor and heart of the original while making the world of light-leaping, alicorns, and elaborate elven fashion easy to visualize.

These volumes work well as an entry point for younger or more visually oriented readers, or as a fresh way for long-time fans to revisit the beginning of Sophie’s journey. After finishing both parts, readers can slide straight into the prose novels without missing any of the key setup for the larger series.
