The Jaipur Trilogy Books in Order

The Jaipur Trilogy follows a connected group of characters as their lives unfold across India and, eventually, Paris. Beginning in the 1950s and moving into the 1970s, the books shift focus from one central character to another while keeping family history, friendship, work, and private choices at the heart of the story.

The series opens with The Henna Artist, set in Jaipur, Rajasthan's Pink City. Lakshmi has left an abusive marriage and made herself indispensable to wealthy clients as a gifted henna artist and confidante. She is careful with other people's secrets because her own independence is fragile. When her estranged husband arrives with the younger sister she never knew existed, Lakshmi must make room for a family responsibility she never expected.

The family keeps changing.

In The Secret Keeper of Jaipur, the timeline jumps ahead to 1969 and gives Lakshmi's former assistant, Malik, more of the spotlight. Lakshmi is now settled in Shimla, while Malik begins an apprenticeship at the Jaipur Royal Palace's facilities office. A glamorous new cinema is being built, and its opening should mark a bright new chapter for the city. Instead, a deadly collapse exposes the ways money, status, and old favors can shape who is protected and who is blamed.

The final novel, The Perfumist of Paris, moves to Paris in 1974 and centers on Lakshmi's sister Radha. Now a wife, mother, and assistant perfumer, Radha is determined to grow into the work she loves. A major fragrance project takes her back to India, where the skills and knowledge of women in Agra become essential to her plans. At the same time, the son she gave up as a child is on his way to Paris, bringing a long-buried part of her life close to the surface.

These are historical novels with plenty of atmosphere, but the tension is personal and practical. Characters worry about money, work, reputation, marriage, children, and who gets to decide their future. Jaipur matters as more than a backdrop, its royal households, neighborhoods, markets, and social rules all shape the opportunities available to the people in the books. Paris adds another setting where Radha must balance freedom with the demands of family.

Each installment has its own main conflict, but the trilogy works best in order because the emotional weight comes from seeing Lakshmi, Malik, and Radha change over time. Start with The Henna Artist for the fullest picture of how their lives first become intertwined.
