Series background & context

Set in the all‑Black community of Grayson Grove, Michigan, the Grayson Family books follow a close group of neighbors rebuilding their lives after the Civil War. The series blends small‑town politics, family drama, and deeply felt romance.

In Vivid, Dr. Viveca Lancaster leaves California to open a medical practice in Grayson Grove. She’s one of the few Black women physicians of her time and runs straight into resistance, starting with Nate Grayson, the town’s bull‑headed mayor who expected a male doctor and nothing more. Their clashes over authority, tradition, and public health slowly shift into mutual respect and a powerful attraction neither of them planned on.

The second book, Jewel, turns the spotlight onto Eli Grayson, Nate’s charming relative whose bachelor status is starting to hurt his professional prospects. To secure a promotion and quiet the town gossips, he persuades his friend Jewel to pose as his wife for a single night. When the ruse snowballs into a legal marriage, two practical people have to learn how to build real intimacy on top of a friendship that was never supposed to change.

Across both novels, Grayson Grove itself feels like a character. Church services, town‑council arguments, school events, and front‑porch conversations sit alongside midwestern winters, economic uncertainty, and the constant risk of outside racism crashing in. Jenkins shows what it meant for Black families to own land, vote, and govern themselves in the late 1800s.

A key thread through the series is the way ambitious women and strong‑willed men find room for each other. Viveca fights for her right to practice medicine and be taken seriously as a professional. Jewel knows her own worth and refuses to be anyone’s convenient cover story. The Grayson men have to figure out how to love women like that without dulling their shine.

If you enjoy historical romances built around community, with nosy but loving neighbors, found family, and couples who truly earn their happy endings, the Grayson Family series offers a compact, satisfying corner of Beverly Jenkins’s larger fictional world.
