Series background & context

The Inn at Sunset Harbor is Sophie Love's longest-running romance series, and it is built around one big, satisfying question: what happens when a woman finally walks away from the life that is making her unhappy and takes a chance on a place she thought she had left behind forever?

That woman is Emily Mitchell, thirty-five, living in New York City when the series opens. She is worn down by a stalled relationship, an unsatisfying routine, and the feeling that she is waiting for a life that never quite arrives. After a painful breakup, she heads to the coast of Maine and returns to her father's abandoned house, a place tied to happy childhood summers but also to family grief, missing memories, and the disappearance of her father many years earlier.

From there, the series becomes both a romance and a rebuilding story. Emily decides to restore the old property and turn it into an inn, which gives the books their steady spine. Renovation disasters, money worries, weather, guests, staffing, and town politics all matter, because Sunset Harbor is not just a backdrop. It is the engine of the story. As the house changes, Emily changes with it.

Daniel, the caretaker, is the key romantic figure from the beginning. Their relationship grows slowly against all the practical mess surrounding the house, the inn, and Emily's complicated family history. That is one of the things that sets this series apart from a lot of small-town romance. It is not built around a new couple in every installment. Instead, it follows Emily and Daniel across years of life together, through courtship, trust issues, family discoveries, marriage, parenthood, loss, and new beginnings.

The Maine setting matters a lot. These books lean into winter storms, summer crowds, old houses, ocean air, holiday seasons, and the particular pull of a small harbor town. Sunset Harbor feels like a place where people remember the past, watch each other's business, and still show up when it matters. The inn itself becomes the emotional center of that world, a home, a business, and a symbol of the life Emily is trying to claim.

There is also a strong family thread running through the series. Emily is not only trying to build a future, she is also trying to understand what happened in her past. Questions about her father, long-buried secrets, childhood trauma, and shifting family ties keep giving the romance extra weight. Later books widen the scope into marriage, children, expansion, and the challenge of holding onto love while real life keeps changing.

So while these novels are warm and easy to sink into, they are not just about courtship. They are about staying, choosing, repairing, and growing up a little more every time life throws something new at you. If you like clean romance with renovation drama, seaside atmosphere, and one central love story allowed to stretch across many books, this is the Sophie Love series most people start with for good reason.
