Series background & context

A Porch by the Sea is another Sophie Love fresh-start romance, but this time the setting shifts from Maine to the northern California coast. The heroine is Emma Gold, thirty-five, a high-powered advertising executive from Los Angeles who has built a life that looks polished from the outside and hollow from the inside. By the time the series begins, her husband's affair and her disillusionment with work have made it impossible to ignore how unhappy she really is.

Then her aunt calls.

What sounds like a temporary visit to a storybook seaside town quickly turns into something much bigger. Emma's aunt wants her to take over a massive old house and consider turning it into a bed-and-breakfast. Emma arrives expecting a weekend. Instead, she gets a crumbling property, a possible second career, a local community with long memories, and a chance to reconnect with parts of herself she had pushed aside, especially her old creative impulses.

Like The Inn at Sunset Harbor, this series uses renovation and hospitality as more than set dressing. Running a B&B means money stress, repairs, permits, guests, town rules, and relatives with opinions. Emma is learning all of that from scratch, and the books get a lot of their conflict from the fact that she is smart and capable in one world but very much a beginner in this one. That makes her a good romance lead because she has to let go of control before she can really build a different life.

The central romantic thread comes through the local antiques dealer, who offers both chemistry and the possibility of a calmer, more grounded future. But romance is only part of the picture. Emma also has to deal with a hostile relative, a developer who threatens what she is building, and the larger question of whether she is brave enough to stay in a life that looks nothing like the one she planned.

The coastal California setting gives the books a warm, airy feel. Porches, sea views, antiques, summer guests, small-town events, and a slightly quirky cast all help create a relaxed atmosphere, even when Emma's life is anything but relaxed. These are sweet romances, so the focus stays on emotional safety, rebuilding, and personal growth rather than high drama for its own sake.

In other words, this series is about what happens after the crash. Emma's old life falls apart, but the books are more interested in what she makes next than in what she lost. If you like second-chance love stories with beach-town charm, renovation problems, and a heroine learning how to want something different, A Porch by the Sea is very much in Sophie Love's comfort zone.
