Series background & context

The Hollows Graphic Novels series brings Rachel Morgan’s world into full color and adds a richly illustrated companion volume. Rather than simply retelling the original novels, these books step sideways to show key moments and hidden corners of the Hollows from fresh angles, making them best read as supplements rather than replacements.

Blood Work is an original graphic novel that rewinds to the first time Rachel Morgan is partnered with Ivy Tamwood at Inderland Security. Ivy has just been demoted from homicide to street duty and is furious about being saddled with a rookie earth witch. Rachel, for her part, is determined to prove herself and has no idea how dangerous a frustrated living vampire can be. Their early case chasing smugglers, trolls, and a particularly nasty coven of witches lays down the foundations of trust, friction, and complicated attraction that echo through the prose series.

The second graphic novel, Blood Crime, continues that backstory. Someone wants Ivy and Rachel out of the way, and a series of attacks makes it clear that the threat is personal. Where the first book shows them learning how to work together, the second raises questions about who is pulling strings inside Inderland Security and how much control the undead masters really have over their living agents.

Both graphic novels are scripted by Harrison, which helps them feel of a piece with the main books. The art leans into the contrast between mundane Cincinnati streets and the strange beauty of Inderlander characters, from pixies to vampires in business suits. You see Rachel’s messy spells and Ivy’s predatory grace rather than just imagining them, and side characters who might show up for a few chapters in prose can steal a panel or a page.

Alongside the graphic novels sits The Hollows Insider, a heavily illustrated companion volume that reads like an in-world dossier on Rachel’s universe. It includes faux newspaper clippings, case files, spell notes, character sketches, maps, and snippets of correspondence, all framed by a light narrative thread. It is not required to follow the main plot, but it deepens everything from vampire politics to how a simple charm is assembled.

Together, these books reward readers who already know the Hollows and want to linger. They are also a good way to tempt comics readers into Rachel’s story or to hand a visual sampler to a friend who is not sure about committing to a long series. Expect familiar voices, new angles on old events, and a lot of visual detail packed into each page.
